The Regional Conference on Transport Corridors and Health 2024

The Regional Conference on Transport Corridors and Health 2024 promises to be the first of its kind. It is scheduled from December 2nd to 4th, 2024, at The Edge Conventional Center, College School of Insurance, Nairobi, Kenya.

Over the years, global mobility has slowly but surely increased. As a result, this has had tremendous positive outcomes, such as economic growth, enhanced by the movement of skilled workers across borders, boosting the development in various sectors. Global mobility has encouraged the exchange of knowledge and expertise, strengthening local industries and educational institutions. It also allows the participants to participate in cultural exchanges where they get exposed to different cultures that foster understanding and collaboration, enriching the social fabric of the various communities. Investment in mobility has led to better infrastructure, such as improved public transport systems, which benefits the broader population. The influx of international businesses has also created jobs, which is also a positive outcome.

However, global mobility adversely impacts the society. The increased travel and transportation associated with global mobility contributes to carbon emissions and environmental degradation. Rapid changes in population dynamics have strained public services and infrastructure, leading to overcrowding and reduced quality of life in some areas. We can’t overlook the spread of diseases across borders within the mobile population and the communities they interact with. It is for this particular reason that Star Alliance and the Northern Corridor Transit Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA) are organizing a pivotal conference named The Regional Conference on Transport Corridors and Health 2024 to unite transport industry leaders, healthcare professionals, governments, community advocates, mobile populations, and corridor communities to tackle the unique and pressing challenges facing Africa’s transport supply chain.

Unfortunately, the critical role that transport corridors play in transmitting infectious diseases, including epidemics and pandemics, has not been adequately recognized. There is no record of conferences dedicated to the intersection of transportation and the spread of infectious diseases. Neither specialized scientific forums nor general discussions have unveiled research on this nexus between transportation and public health, including effective interventions that could be replicated and scaled up within and between communities and nations in sub-Saharan Africa.

Against this background, these two organizations plan to convene a three-day regional conference to advance knowledge and action on developing safe and healthy supply chains along transport corridors.

The objectives:

The Regional Conference on Transport Corridors and Health 2024 aims to foster stakeholder synergies to promote health, trade and economic development along Africa’s transport corridors.

Specific objectives include.

  • Increase understanding of transport corridors’ critical role in spreading infectious diseases across and within Africa.
  • Unite stakeholders – transport industry leaders, healthcare professionals, governments, community advocates, mobile populations, and corridor communities – to develop solutions for mitigating disease transmission risks.
  • Share successful programs and lessons learned to enhance the safety and health of Africa’s transport supply chains.
  • Spur developing and implementing effective interventions to curb disease spread within and across Sub-Saharan African nations.

The theme:

Health for all, Health everywhere: Synergies in creating Health and Promoting Trade and Economic Development along Transport Corridors in Africa

Sub-themes

  • The role of transport corridors in spreading infectious diseases.
  • The role of research and surveillance in preventing the spread of diseases along the transport corridors in Africa.
  • Trade facilitation and economic growth.
  • Leaving no one behind; building synergies in pandemic/epidemic control and response along the transport supply chain.
  • The role of AI in Cross-border health and resilient African economies.

The approach for the Regional Conference on Transport Corridors and Health 2024 is to have a conference with plenary sessions and exhibitions focused on knowledge sharing, networking and building synergy. The plenary sessions will feature keynote speakers, Presentations on impactful projects, best practices & case studies, Panel Discussions and a Q&A on the different sub-themes.

The Exhibition space is designed for networking, allowing organizations to showcase products, solutions, and collaboration opportunities. It will also serve as a community space for diverse voices, including truck drivers, healthcare providers and sex workers to share their perspectives with planners, developers, and policymakers.
