Project Overview
The Revenue Generation Pilot (RGP) comes from a realisation within North Star that the old NGO model cannot be sustained in a time of shrinking foreign assistance, funding and increased calls for efficiency and impact on global health. Since January 2018, North Star has been in the process of developing a revenue-generation strategy. After considerable research and financial modelling, which involved a series of cost-benefit analyses, in August 2018, North Star implemented a fee-for-service Blue Box clinic in Cato Ridge, South Africa. Through our partnership with the Trafigura and Puma Energy Foundations and Sumerian Partners, we identified a revenue-generation opportunity involving piloting a fee-for-service clinic in Cato Ridge, South Africa.
The Cato Ridge RGP clinic currently provides services to the Cato Ridge community, truck drivers stopping at the Cato Ridge truck stop, and sex workers providing services at Cato Ridge.
Objectives of the project
The implementation of a revenue generation pilot clinic has 5 clearly defined objectives, namely:
- Revenue generating feasibility assessment.
- Potential cost base contribution.
- Client response and client attrition.
- Operational research to improve on the revenue-generation model.
- Implementation scenario blue printing.

Our clinics are located at ‘hotspots’ such as border posts, transit towns or ports where large numbers of trucks stop, load and offload and where sex work and informal trades flourish. Most are open late, tailored to the hours of our core target populations.
