ORTEC Recognised for Corporate Social Responsibility

This week, ORTEC, one of North Star’s core partners, was recognised by the city of Gouda as the winner of the 2012 Corporate Social Responsibility Award.

“As one of our core partners, ORTEC has truly played a critical role in helping North Star transform health care delivery in Africa. Because of their technological oversight, and the tremendous support of their staff in developing COMETS, our electronic health passport system, we can ensure every patient has access to their medical data and, therefore, effective care, at North Star Roadside Wellness Centres and partner medical clinics across continent” said Luke Disney, the Executive Director at North Star Alliance.

ORTEC began developing COMETS (Corridor Medical Transfer System) for North Star in 2005 to act as an electronic health passport so that clients could access their health information anywhere in our network. The system, which is continually being upgraded, uses unique personal identification numbers that enable us to monitor who comes through a Roadside Wellness Centre, what illnesses they present with, how they are treated, whether they return, and whether the same person goes to another Roadside Wellness Centre within the network.

In 2011, ORTEC continued growing their support for North Star by developing and launching a new optimisation tool called POLARIS, which combines information from a wide range of sources to improve planning and decision making on the ground. POLARIS is being used at North Star to ensure that future Roadside Wellness Centres are strategically placed and that the mix of health and safety services is optimal throughout our clinical network.

Together, tools like COMETS and POLARIS are ensuring that North Star stays on the forefront of technological innovation when it comes to understanding the impact of diseases on highly mobile populations and creating appropriate solutions to address them.
