Clearing over 1,100 trucks daily, the Beitbridge Border Crossing between South Africa and Zimbabwe is one of Southern Africa’s busiest. As a result, it has also long been a hotspot for the transmission of diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections. In 2009, we took a big first step in combatting the transmission disease in Beitbridge, Zimbabwe by establishing a clinic directly outside of the border grounds. This month, we’re doubling our effort at this important transport hub by proudly announcing the opening of a new sister clinic located in Musina, on the South African side of the border.
Our new clinic in Musina is the fourth of five clinics to open in South Africa as part of a collaborative initiative with the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI), PEPFAR and USAID. In 2013, we also established new clinics in Pongola, Ngodwana, and a new flagship clinic the Johannesburg suburb of City Deep, in collaboration with these partners.
Like our other clinics, Musina will provide a full range of health services including primary health services; screening, diagnosis and treatment of STIs; screening for tuberculosis and malaria; HIV counselling and testing; health referrals, and a variety of educational, outreach, and training programmes.
