Targeted intervention
North Star Alliance focuses on a relatively small but highly mobile and influential target population in the AIDS epidemic. In general, truck drivers have higher prevalence rates and are capable of exposing new populations to HIV along transport routes.
Measurable results
North Star is deploying an integrated patient data and reporting system to track results across borders. Monthly target updates including treatment data will be made available to donors and North Star will deliver an annual certified audit report. Individual country level Wellness Centres are audited on a bi-annual basis.
Social franchise model
North Star wants to create sustainable interventions that mobilise the transport sector to promote the health and well-being of its employees. Therefore, North Star will fund the establishment and start-up costs for new Wellness Centres, but then recruit private or public sector transport companies or national governments to ‘adopt’ the Centres and take over their running costs.
Rights-based approach
North Star employs a rights-based approach when formulating our targets. We aim to improve access to health education, HIV/STI prevention measures, testing and treatment for truckdrivers as well as the communities with which they directly interact, including sex workers.
Trusted public-private backing
Representatives of reputable organisations such as TNT and WFP sit on
the North Star Alliance board, and we are officially supported by UNAIDS
and the International Transport Workers’ Federation.
